HELSINKI

Veli-Ville Sivén (1993) is a Helsinki-based scenographer (light, space, video), media artist, and musician. He holds a Master of Theatre Arts in Lighting Design from the University of the Arts Helsinki and works across stage, exhibition, and performative contexts.

In his practice, Sivén combines light, space, video, and woodworking into precise, minimalist compositions. For him, form is content, and his work merges space and video through light, often building on the use of straight lines. He is interested in abstraction as a mode of experience rather than representation: “The abstract is not nothing — it is like instrumental music, there’s just no words,” a space in which meaning emerges through the human need to contextualize and verbalize the unknown.

Sivén’s work has been presented in theatres, exhibitions, and live music contexts in Finland and internationally. His artistic practice is influenced by modernist visual art, post-dramatic theatre, psychoanalysis, and John Dewey’s philosophy of experience.

He is also a co-founder of the redukt_ artist duo and studio, which develops an artistic practice they call “doing for real” (“oikeesti tekeminen”).

Sivén received the Valosäde Award in 2024 for his lighting design for Tove Teuvalla Opera.

He plays keyboards in the band Eleanoora Roosenholm and is the founder of the post-pop duo PWR NAP.
