SQUARES AND CHAIRS (2024) - EXHIBITION
Squares and Chairs is an interdisciplinary media art exhibition that explores the tension between material craft, historical design, and virtual space. The project’s catalyst was the physical construction of two iconic chairs designed by Gerrit Rietveld, which sparked a broader artistic investigation into geometric abstraction, primary colors, and spatial harmony. The exhibition bridges traditional woodworking with cutting-edge technology, combining three-dimensional sculptures, light interaction, synthetic soundscapes, and an immersive 3D virtual reality animation. By translating rigid modernist compositions into dynamic multimedia installations, Squares and Chairs creates an interactive dialogue between the artwork, the architectural space, and the viewer’s perception.

ABOUT THE LIGHT
Light and perception are foundational to these works. The installation manipulates how the human brain processes visual frequencies; when juxtaposed precisely, hyper-saturated colors begin to emit an optical glow, shifting the experience from passive viewing to active neurological response. This exploration of optical extremes is heightened by the use of an ultra-matte black paint that absorbs nearly all visible light. Side-by-side with standard pigments, it redefines the depth of the pictorial plane. The artworks become a study in contrast: white surfaces shift dynamically under changing illumination, deep blacks swallow space, and contrasting color fields compete for distinction, constantly challenging the boundaries of physical and digital depth.

THE BERLIN CHAIR
The historic visual language of the De Stijl movement retains a compelling allure. My investigation began in 2023 with Gerrit Rietveld’s Berlin Chair (1923), a piece that encapsulates the movement’s core philosophy: eenheid in veelheid("unity in diversity"), where asymmetric, individual components coalesce into a unified sculptural whole. Discovering the manual How to Construct Rietveld’s Furniture revealed a radical ideological layer. It embodies the democratic, anarchist spirit of early modernism—the idea that high design should be accessible to anyone willing to build it, defying its contemporary status as a luxury commodity. By choosing to physically construct both the Berlin Chair and the Steltman Chair, the making process became my conceptual methodology. Engaging with every millimeter of the wood served as a visceral initiation into the modernist vernacular before translating it into my own contemporary artworks.
